Shower valve and cartridge replacement in Alhambra

Most shower trouble starts in the valve, not the head. A steady drip with the handle off, a shower that never gets hot, or one that suddenly turns scalding all point to a worn cartridge or a limit stop out of adjustment. We sort out which, and fix it from the front of the wall.

What we do

  • Single-handle cartridges from Moen, Delta, Price Pfister and Kohler matched to the valve series
  • Stems, washers and seats on two- and three-handle compression valves
  • Hot and cold mixing problems, from a stuck balancing spool to a cartridge set one notch off
  • Anti-scald limit stops adjusted and checked with a thermometer at the head
  • Trim kits with a new handle, escutcheon and sleeve made for the valve behind them
  • Like-for-like valve replacement when the body is cracked or parts are no longer made

In Alhambra homes

A city report on Alhambra’s housing finds that about 77 percent of its homes were built before 1980. In bathrooms that old, the valve may be the original three-handle setup with a center diverter, or a replacement from a later update that no longer matches its trim. Many three-handle and early single-handle valves still have parts available; the work is identifying exactly which ones, and that usually starts with a photo.

Signs the cartridge is worn

Water trickles from the head for minutes after the shower is off. The handle takes more force than it used to, or turns past where it once stopped. The temperature drifts during a shower without anyone touching it. Hot water arrives at the sink but the shower stays lukewarm. Each of these has a likely cause inside the valve, and none of them is fixed by changing the shower head.

Why the limit stop matters

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission says most adults will suffer third-degree burns if exposed to 150 degree water for two seconds. Single-handle valves include a rotational limit stop that caps how far the handle can turn toward hot. It is often left at the factory setting or knocked out of place during an earlier repair. After any cartridge work we set the stop and measure the water at the head so the hottest setting stays comfortable.

Matching parts to brand and series

Moen, Delta, Price Pfister and Kohler each made several cartridges over the years that look nearly the same and are not interchangeable. The handle style does not always tell you which one is inside. We read the valve markings, and when they have worn off we take the old cartridge with us to match it, rather than forcing a near fit that leaks a month later.

Trim kits and handles

A cracked handle, a plate with chipped finish or a sleeve that no longer seals can make an old shower look worse than it works. A trim kit made for your valve brand replaces those parts and lines the handle up with the cartridge again. We caulk the plate to the tile afterward so water does not get behind it.

What we leave to a plumber

Our valve replacements keep the same type of valve in the same place on the same lines. Relocating a valve, changing the number of handles, adding body sprays or a second outlet, or repairing pipe inside the wall goes to a plumber, and we tell you so in our first reply.
