What we do
- Gas set to pilot or breaker off, and the tank cooled before draining
- Tank drained and flushed with bursts of cold water until it runs clear
- Anode rod removed and inspected where ceiling height allows
- Drain valve resealed or replaced with brass if it drips
- Relief valve tested and the temperature setting checked
- Tank refilled, air purged at the faucets, burner or elements back on
In Alhambra homes
The City of Alhambra’s annual water quality report for 2025 lists total hardness at 240 ppm, with a range of 160 to 290. The U.S. Geological Survey classes anything above 180 mg/L as very hard. Water like that drops a lot of calcium when it is heated, so sediment builds faster in Alhambra tanks than in many other cities, and flushing matters more here.

Signs the tank needs flushing
Rumbling, popping or crackling while the burner runs. Hot water that runs out sooner than it used to. White or tan grit caught in the hot side of faucet aerators. A tank that seems to run constantly. Each of these points to sediment on the bottom of the tank, where it insulates the water from the burner.
Rusty water and the anode rod
Brown hot water, or a sulfur smell from the hot tap, often means the anode rod is spent. The rod corrodes on purpose to protect the steel tank; once it is gone, the tank rusts instead. We check the rod during a flush where there is room to pull it, and tell you what we see.
What the DOE suggests
The U.S. Department of Energy’s Energy Saver guide recommends draining a quart of water from the tank every three months to remove sediment that impedes heat transfer and lowers efficiency, following the maker’s directions. With water as hard as Alhambra’s, a full flush is worth adding whenever the tank gets noisy.
Flushing an older tank
A tank that has never been drained can clog its drain valve with scale. We open it slowly, stop if it plugs, and clear it before continuing. Plastic drain valves sometimes drip afterward, so we bring a brass replacement.
Electric tanks
Electric heaters collect the same sediment, and it can bury the lower element and shorten its life. We switch off the breaker before draining, so the elements are never powered in an empty tank, and restore power only after the tank is full.
When it is more than a flush
If the tank leaks through its shell, the burner or vent has trouble, or the heater is near the end of its life, our water heater repair and replacement page covers that. Gas line, vent and tankless work goes to a plumber or gas fitter.
